About Festivals of Kerala

The festivities and celebrations of Kerala are unique, vibrant and full of colours. One could find a mix of religions and cultures in these celebrations. One of the insignia’s of Kerala is its boat race in the mesemerising backwaters of Kerala. It is held on the second Saturday of August every year and named Nehru Trophy Boat Race. Another well known festival of Kerala is Onam, which is symbolic with the colour yellow. It is the annual harvest festival of Kerala and the celebrations continue for ten consecutive days. Elephant processions, classic and folk dance performance, music recitals and floral decorations are the significant parts of Onam.

No celebration in Kerala is complete without the Elephant pageant. Pachyderms (Elephants) hold religious significance in Kerala and they are loved in all parts of Kerala. They are so much revered that every temple groom one or more elephants for ritualistic purposes.

In the long list of festivals, Theyyam is a popular ritual form of worship in the north of the Malabar. Theyyam is considered as a God and people seek blessings from Theyyam. It is one of the important festivals in Kerala.
